Ah, it’s that time of year when mysteriously out of nowhere figs start showing up at my grocery store. If’ you have never had the pleasure of snacking on a fresh fig you are missing out. Dried ones are great for off season and fig Newtons apparently harbor some type of charm but a fresh fig is something to behold and cherish.
I like them best simply prepared. In the morning a little Greek yogurt, figs and honey sprinkled with some almonds is a divine breakfast. I know that combo sounds cliche, but it’s just that for a reason. It’s freakin good together. Another great fig combo is with arugula. Going back to my mad pizza skills, a simple no red sauce pizza topped with a creamy Havarti or cheddar, figs and throwing on some arugula at the end makes a great summery fresh combo. The other night I made a salad with mixed greens, thin sliced red onion and figs with just a balsamic vinegar dressing.
I am a fan of something to compliment the sweet, whether that’s a sour, salty, peppery or hot. (tangy yogurt, peppery arugula, spicy red onion) If you enjoy figs like I do, what are your favorite combos?
